Recruited by a scheming vizier in ancient Babylon, Spinal and his bandit network were hired to disrupt the city’s flow of resources-one small move of the Vizier to lessen the King’s power by constricting his wealth. In clearer moments, when the insanity of his ancient bane isn’t fully in control, Spinal remembers snippets of his previous existence, before he was cursed, when he was human, feared, and rich…. Upon finally locating the artifact and finding it drained of its powers, however, he flies into a rage and begins a global crusade to find the culprit. He no longer speaks and has a very one-track mind, always pursuing his prized Mask so that he may be granted great powers and freedom. He cackles with glee in the midst of battle, enjoying combat to a disturbing extent. Spinal is a complete maniac, having been driven insane by the wild pull of the Mask of the Ancients over the hundreds (or thousands) of years since his death. Spinal's retro costume mirrors his original KI1 appearance, though his curved cutlass and his buckle shield has a different design. Initially his eyes were green, but fan outcry caused them to be changed to their traditional red hue. He retains his cutlass but has traded his buckler shield in for a larger, seemingly-living, magical shield with the face and tentacles of a kraken adorned on the front, with glowing green runes etched on the sides of it. He retains his red bandanna, and now wears scraps of clothing, such as a kilt and gauntlets, while having several ropes wrapped around his body to hold the broken steering wheel of a pirate ship around his back in place, buckled boots on both his feet and a large belt around his waist. In Killer Instinct (2013), Spinal receives a large overhaul to his appearance, accenting the pirate theme of the character. In Killer Instinct 2/Gold, the ancient Spinal is virtually identical to the one in the future, though he wears a spiked belt and metallic kilt around his waist as well as the previous items. The unrelenting pace of both neutral and offense combined with the unique Combo System has garnered KI a reputation as an extremely fast and punishing game, but if you are in need of a game with a zany, high power cast and extremely hype reads based moments, then look no further than Killer Instinct (2013).In Killer Instinct (1994), Spinal was a simple skeleton wielding a curved cutlass and buckler shield, spiked gauntlets on his arms, a red bandanna around his skull and hooped earrings dangling from the spots where his ears should be. Compounding this is the extremely risky and just as rewarding Counter Breaker, a mechanic allowing the offensive player to call out their opponent's breaking habits and severely punish them for being predictable, all while leaving themselves stuck in an excruciatingly long animation unable to block if their opponent doesn't take the bait. Combo Breakers mean that even if you are getting hit, your head has to stay in the match and they force both players to be constantly engaging in mind games. Combos must have a breakable point to be valid, which means there is always an opportunity for the defensive player to break out of it and return to neutral. Instead of a link or chain based combo system, KI has a specific combo state that is covered in the Combo System of this page. The most distinguishing gameplay mechanic is the combo and combo breaker systems. While bearing some resemblance to the Street Fighter series in movement and button layout, the overall pace of the game is much quicker. One of the first major fighting games released with rollback netcode, KI's online helped to lead the charge towards FGs with well functioning netplay, matching with or even still surpassing the netcode quality of contemporary releases despite being nearly a decade old. It was released exclusively for the Xbox One on Novembut was later ported to PC through the Windows 10 Store on Septemand Steam on September 27, 2017. Initially developed by Double Helix Games during Season 1, development was handed over to Iron Galaxy for the remainder of the game's dev lifetime. Killer Instinct (2013) is a reboot of the Killer Instinct series that began in 1994.
